Adhesive Capsulitis – “Frozen Shoulder”

Adhesive capsulitis, or “frozen shoulder,” is a condition known as frozen shoulder and is a type of chronic inflammation of the shoulder joint capsule. It is characterized by persistent shoulder stiffness, limited mobility, and gradually worsening pain. The symptoms may last for months or even years, especially in women. It often appears without an obvious cause, but is more common in people with metabolic diseases such as diabetes or thyroid disorders, and in those who have had previous shoulder injuries or surgeries.

Types and Stages

There are two main types:

  1. Primary Adhesive Capsulitis:Appears in individuals with specific conditions (e.g., diabetes, thyroid disorders, Parkinson’s).
  2. Secondary Adhesive Capsulitis: Caused by trauma, cold exposure, or previous injuries. Προκαλείται από τραυματισμούς, φλεγμονές ή προηγούμενες θλάσεις.

The condition develops in three stages:

  1. Pain and limited movement (duration: ~3 months).
  2. Persistence of pain with intense stiffness..
  3. Gradual full recovery, with persistent limitation in movement., με περιορισμό της κίνησης.

Treatment:

Therapy usually begins with conservative treatment:

  • Physiotherapy
  • Pain management (ice therapy)
  • Corticosteroid injections (in selected cases)

In more severe cases, arthroscopic surgery is applied:

  • Cleaning of the joint
  • Release of the joint capsule to restore mobility
  • Removal of osteophytes and loose bodies

Dr. Nikolaos Sachinis specializes in all effective arthroscopic techniques for frozen shoulder via posterior shoulder access, without trauma to the rotator cuff. Surgery is performed through small incisions using specialized microsurgical tools for excellent results.

Postoperative Care:

  • Immediate pain relief
  • Early physiotherapy
  • Gradual restoration of shoulder mobility

Treatment ensures long-term pain relief and functional recovery of the shoulder.
