Lateral Collateral Ligament Reconstruction

Ligament reconstruction is a surgical procedure used to treat partial or complete tears of the medial or lateral collateral ligaments of the elbow. It is most commonly indicated in athletes, where rest and physiotherapy alone are often insufficient due to the high demands of their sports activities.

Symptoms of Ligament Tear:

  • A tearing or popping sound may be heard at the moment of rupture.
  • Severe pain on the inner (medial) or outer (lateral) side of the elbow.
  • Reduced strength, accuracy, and speed during throwing movements.

Lateral Collateral Ligament Reconstruction (LCL Reconstruction):

This procedure is indicated in chronic cases of posterolateral rotatory instability, often following dislocation or repetitive microtrauma. In mild cases, it can be performed arthroscopically. However, in more severe conditions—especially when the extensor tendons are involved—an open surgical approach is necessary. A graft, typically harvested from the triceps tendon, is used and securely anchored in the appropriate anatomical position to restore stability.

Medial Collateral Ligament Reconstruction (MCL Reconstruction):

Tears of the medial collateral ligament are relatively rare and occur primarily in throwing athletes, such as baseball players. Surgical reconstruction involves using a tendon graft, often harvested from the knee, to stabilize the inner (medial) side of the elbow and restore joint function.

Postoperative Rehabilitation:

Following ligament reconstruction, rehabilitation is gradual and carefully structured, aiming for a full return to athletic performance without compromise. Dr. Sahinis specializes in these procedures, delivering excellent outcomes in restoring elbow function and stability for high-performance athletes.
