Meniscus Tear Repair

Arthroscopic Management of Meniscal Tear:

The menisci—the medial and lateral—are crescent-shaped, elastic structures located between the femoral and tibial joint surfaces. They play a key role in shock absorption and in evenly distributing loads across the knee joint. Composed primarily of collagen fibers and water, they contribute significantly to joint stability and long-term cartilage protection.

Diagnosis and Conservative Treatment

The diagnosis of a rupture is made through clinical examinations and imaging methods such as MRI. Grade 1 and 2 lesions, if not accompanied by severe damage, are treated conservatively. Treatment includes ice therapy, anti-inflammatory drugs, an immobilisation of the lower limb and a physiotherapy programme to restore range of motion.Diagnosis and conservative treatment

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Meniscus tear is the most common sports injury but it also occurs in adults due to degeneration. Symptoms include pain when walking or changing direction, pain on deep sitting, joint swelling and limited movement. The diagnosis is confirmed by MRI, which highlights the location and type of tear.

Treatment of Meniscus Rupture

Arthroscopy is the most modern and minimally invasive treatment method. Through small incisions, the doctor inserts a camera and tools to repair the rupture.

Surgical Techniques

  1. Partial Meniscectomy: The damaged portion of the meniscus is removed, while the healthy surface is preserved. Recovery time ranges from 4 to 6 weeks.
  2. Meniscus Repair: Preferred for younger patients with tears in well-vascularized areas (red zone), where healing is possible. Full recovery takes 10–12 weeks, with a significantly reduced risk of osteoarthritis.

Specialised Cases

For ruptures at the root of the meniscus, arthroscopic diosteal stapling is applied, which offers a stable result with the use of sutures and special tools. This method preserves the function of the meniscus and reduces the risk of extensive damage.

After the Surgery

Anesthesia may be either spinal or general. The patient usually returns home within 24 hours and begins a physiotherapy program to strengthen the knee. Early mobilization contributes to optimal recovery and a return to daily activities.
