Ankle Arthroscopy – Ankle Conditions and Treatment Approaches

Disorders of the ankle joint often result from genetic predisposition, arthritis or damage due to constant stress, intense sports activity (e.g., football, running) and other factors.

Ankle Sprain and Ankle Impingement Syndrome

The most common sports-related injury is a sprain, which can lead to recurrent trauma and Ankle Impingement Syndrome. This condition causes pain in the front part of the ankle, especially when lifting the foot, due to scar tissue or osteophytes that form after multiple sprains.

Treatment:

Simple sprain: It is treated with conservative methods (ice therapy, bandaging, physiotherapy).

Severe or Chronic Cases: If the condition progresses to impingement syndrome, arthroscopic surgery is indicated. Using a minimally invasive technique, scar tissue and loose bodies are removed, and cartilage lesions are treated.

Achilles Tendonitis and Rupture

Achilles tendonitis causes pain, especially in the morning upon waking, and worsens with activity. Recurrent inflammation leads to degeneration and increases the risk of tendon rupture.

Treatment:

Tendonitis: Conservative treatment (ice therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, physiotherapy).

Rupture: Surgical repair using a percutaneous technique and removal of degenerated tissue. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, and the patient is discharged the same day.

Other Conditions::

Peroneal Tendonitis: Causes pain on the outer side of the ankle.

Plantar Fasciitis: Inflammation near the heel bone.

Metatarsal Drop: Causes discomfort in the sole of the foot.

These conditions are usually the result of overuse or injury and are primarily managed with conservative treatment. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be required.
