Stiffness Treatment

Elbow stiffness or ankylosis often occurs after severe trauma, inflammation, or a degenerative process that causes contraction of the soft tissues around the joint. It is frequently accompanied by ectopic ossification or ulnar neuritis, and may also result from adhesions or damage to the articular cartilage. In any case, stiffness leads to a marked limitation of movement and requires appropriate treatment. Effective management begins with a thorough evaluation via X-ray, ultrasound, or MRI. Particular attention is given to the overall assessment of bone structure, ligaments, and joint stability. If stiffness is combined with instability, the elbow may become functionally “frozen,” making rehabilitation more challenging.

Conservative treatment.

For recent or mild stiffness, treatment primarily focuses on physiotherapy. If there is no improvement within three months, surgical intervention is recommended to prevent further progression of the condition.

Surgical management

  • Arthroscopy: This method is preferred for releasing adhesions and correcting the contracted capsule. It helps reduce pain and speeds up recovery when performed by a specialized orthopedic surgeon, such as Dr. Sahinis.
